Solar fountains, pumps and solar panels

A solar pond fountain pump is sometimes unsatisfactory for continuous performance. I am now referring to the low cost non-rechargeable solar pond fountain pump. Take care when buying a solar pond fountain pump .. read the instructions

If all you need is a fountain pump that will run when the sun shines and produce a small fountain head then a solar pond fountain pump is OK.

Solar pond fountain pump runs best in small ponds. If you keep fish the a solar pump must be able to run 24 hours per day because the biofilter needs water flow 24hrs per day.

I tried a solar pond fountain pump from a leading supplier in the UK a couple of years ago ( a diamond solar pond fountain pump) and used it in my own pond as an experiment. I was a bit disappointed. Perhaps they have improved since then.

Some types of solar pond fountain pump come with a larger solar panel and battery that charges to allow the pump to work if the sun is not shining - until the battery power runs out. This type will be better. Here's an example of a fountain driven by solar powered panel ... I like it.
